An Amalgam filling is used to repair and protect the tooth by closing gaps, repairing chips or cracks, protecting exposed tooth roots and restoring decayed teeth.
A silver amalgam filling is made from mercury, silver, tin, copper, and other trace metals.
Amalgams are usually placed in one appointment. While the tooth is numb, the defect or decay is removed and the tooth cleaned. We will then pack the amalgam filling into the space and shape and polish it, restoring the tooth to its original form and function. As with most dental restorations, amalgam fillings are not permanent, and they may need to be replaced eventually, but they are durable and can last for years.
Each filling material available comes with advantages and disadvantages. Call us, and we will discuss the options with you and find the best way to restore your smile.
