What Is a Sealant, and How Does It Help Fight Decay?

In an ideal world, no one would ever worry about tooth decay. Everyone would flash a white, pearly smile, but that just is not the case. The good news is that there are treatments available to restore, or even prevent tooth decay. Dental sealants work well to prevent cavities. They are usually used for children and young adults but have been shown to be beneficial to adults as well.

What Is a Dental Sealant?

A dental sealant acts as a barrier to prevent cavities. It is made of plastic material, primarily designed to protect the premolars, or bicuspids, and molars, which are the teeth that tend to suffer from tooth decay the most. When applied to the chewing surface of these teeth, it stops plaque and acid from eroding and eating away at the tooth enamel, which is how cavities begin to form.

However well you brush, your toothbrush can’t reach into all the grooves or depressions on your tooth’s chewing surface, so plaque and food particles begin to collect, resulting in dental caries. Dental sealants protect your teeth in these vulnerable spots.

What Should You Expect?

Applying a sealant is a straightforward, painless process. First, we will give your tooth a thorough cleaning; then we will place an acidic gel briefly to roughen the surface to help the sealant adhere well to your tooth. The Dentist, Dental Hygienist or Registered Dental Assistant will rinse off the gel and dry off the tooth, and will finally apply the sealant and use a curing light to make sure it hardens. Dental sealants can last up to 10 years, after which they will need replacement.

Preventative Care

Along with dental sealant, practicing good oral hygiene is another way to fight tooth decay. Some of the easiest and smartest ways to maintain your oral health are brushing and flossing multiple times a day. You should also ensure you eat a healthy diet, and avoid eating junk food and drinking sugary or carbonated drinks. Most importantly, make sure to visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanups to maintain your optimal dental health.
